John Andurga stated that the best way to honour the nation’s martyrs is through a vibrant celebration, noting that the day belongs to all South Sudanese who perished during the liberation struggle.
Cde. Mary Paul Ngondeng reminded the youth that since 16 May brought freedom and dignity, it is now their responsibility to advocate for peace and stability. Cde. Amb. Jimmy Atilio underscored the role of the creative sector in portraying the anniversary in a way that honours founding heroes such as the late Cde. Dr. John Garang de Mabior, the late Cde. The South Sudanese comedians’ community, represented by prominent comedian Mr. TB and members of the comedy industry, officially declared their commitment to the anniversary. Speaking on behalf of the creative sector, Mr. TB emphasised that comedians serve as an important voice in honouring the foundational sacrifices made for the nation.
The declaration further highlighted the artistic community’s remembrance of the brothers and sisters who gave their lives for the liberation of the nation. Mr. TB reiterated the original vision of the SPLM/SPLA by calling for an end to ethnic divisions in favour of a unified national identity. He also called on all citizens to work together in the mission to build a prosperous and peaceful South Sudan. The meeting concluded with a collective affirmation of the party’s legacy, marked by the spirited chant of “SPLM Oyee!”
The 16 May anniversary marks the inception of the SPLM/SPLA in 1983. As the nation prepares for the 43rd anniversary, the SPLM National Secretariat continues to engage various sectors of society, including youth, women’s groups, and the creative arts, to ensure a celebration that reinforces national unity and the spirit of the revolution.
